Uber has launched a boat-hailing service on the picturesque Dal Lake in Kashmir, offering tourists a chance to explore the region’s famous Shikara boats. Starting on 2nd November, users can book rides on these traditional wooden boats through the Uber app, with reservations available 12 hours to 15 days in advance. While Uber will match customers with Shikara operators, the company will not charge a fee for bookings made through its platform. Instead, the entire ticket fare will go directly to the Shikara operators.
This move marks Uber's first water transport service in India, although it already offers similar services in cities like London. Dal Lake is home to around 4,000 Shikaras, often decorated and canopied, providing a unique experience for both locals and tourists. The service aims to combine technology with tradition, providing a seamless way for travellers to book a ride in advance.
Reactions from Shikara operators are mixed. Some are welcoming the initiative, believing it will bring more business and fixed pricing, eliminating haggling. Others are sceptical, arguing that it won’t significantly impact their established customer base. Nevertheless, Uber’s Shikara service offers a new way to experience this stunning part of India, blending modern convenience with a centuries-old tradition.
