Samsung to Boost India R&D Investments to Develop AI Features in Local Languages
January 2025
Samsung is ramping up investments in its R&D centres in Bengaluru and Noida, which have been instrumental in developing AI features in Indian languages for its latest Galaxy S25 smartphones. This move underscores the strategic importance of the Indian market, according to TM Roh, global head of Samsung’s mobile business.
Samsung’s focus on Indian languages, including Hindi, is aimed at enhancing AI features such as Gemini Live, Google’s voice-based conversational technology, on the S25 series. Roh emphasized that India’s AI adoption surpasses the global average, making the development of localised AI features a top priority for the company.
Speaking at Samsung’s Unpacked event in San Jose, Roh mentioned that the role of their Noida and Bengaluru R&D centres is critical, and they will continue to expand their contributions. These centres, Samsung’s largest outside Korea, play a dual role in localizing features and developing core platforms for global products. Roh attributed the strategic importance of India to its large, tech-savvy youth population and widespread mobile phone penetration.
“India will always remain a top priority for Samsung, both for AI development and sales,” he added. Separately, Roh revealed that Samsung is collaborating with global partners to introduce satellite communication on the S25 series, adhering to 3GPP standards.
